We imagine a new, fluid landscape in 2050, where sea level rise, the death of carbon, and the strong flow of human movement converge, initiating a turning point in patterns of settlement.
Reclaiming the soon-to-be-abandoned oil fields of the Mediterranean, we propose a floating infrastructural ribbon growing out into the sea: self-supporting, self-generating and self-sustaining. Dweller-citizens may attach freely and participate in an autonomous and borderless ecosystem. Rejecting capitalist devices of surplus value acquisition – whether accumulation of property or extraction of natural resources – this is a settlement based on care. Its inhabitants relate to the common sea as a renewable source of food, water, and energy, purely offering sustenance, while releasing the land to heal.
